Is ZeroGPT Accurate? We Tested It Against GPTZero
Is ZeroGPT accurate? It claims 98.4%, but on our 28 texts its score caught 10 of 16 AI texts and missed disguised AI. GPTZero caught all 16. See the data.
Is ZeroGPT accurate? Partly: in our October 2026 test, ZeroGPT's AI score caught only 10 of 16 AI texts from Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1, it let disguised AI text through, and its headline verdict contradicted its own percentage on 6 of 28 texts, while GPTZero caught all 16 on the same samples. ZeroGPT advertises 98.4% detection accuracy and a false positive rate under 1% on its homepage.
After nearly 20 years in AI development and digital marketing, I judge a detector by two things: what it misses and who it wrongly accuses. This post shows how ZeroGPT did on 28 texts, where its verdicts contradict themselves, how it compares with GPTZero and Turnitin, and what the free plan gets you.
Last tested: October 22, 2026, with ZeroGPT's free web checker on 28 texts of 279 to 386 words. We did not test GPT models such as GPT-6.1 Sol, very short or very long texts, or paraphrasing and humanizer tools. Detector results change whenever the vendor updates its model, so treat these numbers as a dated snapshot.
My Main Points:
- ZeroGPT's headline verdict was right on 26 of 28 texts, but its own AI percentage was right on only 22 of 28.
- ZeroGPT's AI score caught 10 of 16 AI texts, while GPTZero caught all 16 on the same samples.
- ZeroGPT rated an Opus 5.5 essay written in a sloppy student voice "Human written" at 7.4% AI.
- ZeroGPT's verdict label contradicted its own AI percentage on 6 of 28 texts.
- ZeroGPT flagged none of our 12 human texts, but an outside test of 160 samples measured a 20.51% false positive rate.
The same samples went through GPTZero for our GPTZero accuracy test, and both reviews are part of our 2026 AI detector accuracy study.
ZeroGPT Accuracy in Our October 2026 Test
ZeroGPT's results depend on whether you read its headline label or its AI percentage. Each check returns both, a verdict such as "Your Text is AI/GPT Generated" and a gauge such as "89.8% AI GPT", and in our test they often disagreed.
| Sample group | Texts | Correct by ZeroGPT's label | Correct by ZeroGPT's score (50% cutoff) | Average AI score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plain AI: Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1 | 10 | 10 of 10 | 8 of 10 | 85.0% |
| Disguised AI: student voice, typos | 6 | 4 of 6 | 2 of 6 | 33.7% |
| Human, written before 2022 | 12 | 12 of 12 | 12 of 12 | 4.3% |
ZeroGPT's AI score caught 10 of the 16 AI texts. GPTZero, run on the same texts the same day, caught all 16, and ZeroGPT's headline label landed in between at 14.
ZeroGPT's Verdict Labels Contradict Its Own Scores
ZeroGPT's headline verdict and its AI percentage pointed in opposite directions on 6 of our 28 texts. A teacher who reads the big label and a student who reads the gauge could come away with opposite answers from the same check.
| Sample | ZeroGPT label | ZeroGPT AI score |
|---|---|---|
| Opus 5.5 casual blog post | Most of Your Text is AI/GPT Generated | 26.1% |
| Fable 5.1 casual blog post | Your Text is AI/GPT Generated | 46.6% |
| Fable 5.1 essay in a student voice | Your Text is Most Likely AI/GPT generated | 15.5% |
| Opus 5.5 blog post with typos | Your Text is Most Likely AI/GPT generated | 19.6% |
| Fable 5.1 blog post with typos | Most of Your Text is AI/GPT Generated | 26.7% |
| Fable 5.1 explainer with typos added | Your Text is Likely Human written, may include parts generated by AI/GPT | 51.3% |
ZeroGPT does not explain how the label is chosen, and we confirmed the first case with a screenshot of the result page. Treat neither number as the answer on its own.
ZeroGPT's 98.4% Claim vs Independent Tests
ZeroGPT's homepage claims 98.4% detection accuracy, a false positive rate under 1% and coverage of 35+ model families. Our test landed at 92.9% correct by its label (26 of 28) and 78.6% by its score (22 of 28), on a small set of 28 texts.
The largest public side by side test we found came from DecEptioner, which sells a tool that helps text avoid detection, so read it with that in mind. On 160 samples it measured 73.75% accuracy and a 20.51% false positive rate for ZeroGPT, with ZeroGPT flagging 16 of 78 human texts and catching 56 of 82 AI texts.

How We Tested ZeroGPT
ZeroGPT got 28 texts of 279 to 386 words, pasted one at a time into the free checker without an account. We recorded both the headline label and the AI percentage, and counted a text as flagged when the score passed 50% or the label said AI.
- 12 human texts written before 2022: four introductions from peer reviewed papers on PubMed Central (2017 to 2019), three developer doc sections for Python, PostgreSQL and Django archived in 2019 and 2020, two personal blog posts from 2014 and 2017, and three 2006 essays by English learners whose first languages are Chinese, Arabic and Russian, from the PELIC learner corpus.
- 10 plain AI texts: Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1 each answered five prompts (a research paper introduction, developer docs, a school uniform essay, a casual cooking blog post and a credit score explainer) with default settings.
- 6 disguised AI texts: each model wrote the essay as a hurried 10th grader with a few mistakes and the blog post as a fast typer with typos, and we added typos, homophone swaps and missing commas to two finished AI texts with a script.
GPT models were not tested in this round, so the results cover current Claude models only.
Can ZeroGPT Detect Disguised AI Text?
ZeroGPT struggled with disguised AI text: its score passed 50% on only 2 of our 6 disguised samples, and the average score for the group was 33.7%. That is far closer to the 4.3% average for real human writing than to the 85.0% average for plain AI.
The worst miss was an Opus 5.5 essay we asked to sound like a 10th grader typing quickly, with misspellings such as "alot" and "dont". ZeroGPT called it "Human written" at 7.4% AI, while GPTZero flagged the same essay as 100% AI.
Typos added after the fact hurt ZeroGPT less. An Opus 5.5 essay still scored 81.5% after we scrambled a few words and dropped commas, though a Fable 5.1 explainer fell to 51.3% and picked up a "Likely Human written" label.
ZeroGPT False Positive Rate on Human Writing
ZeroGPT flagged none of our 12 human texts, and 9 of the 12 scored 0% AI. The three highest human scores all went to formal writing: 24.9% and 17% for two academic introductions and 9.5% for a Python tutorial.
ZeroGPT also rated all three non native essays 0% AI, a group a 2023 Stanford study found detectors "consistently misclassify" as AI. Our clean result covers only 12 texts, and DecEptioner's larger test found ZeroGPT flagged 20.51% of human samples, so a false accusation is still a real risk.
Can ZeroGPT Detect Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1?
ZeroGPT caught plain Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1 text in formal styles well, with scores from 89.8% to 100% on the academic, technical, essay and explainer samples. Casual writing was its weak spot: the two models' cooking blog posts scored only 26.1% and 46.6%.
We did not test GPT-6.1 Sol or any other GPT model, so these results say nothing about ChatGPT output. Our GPT-6.1 Sol vs Opus 5.5 comparison covers how those models differ.
ZeroGPT vs GPTZero: Which Is More Accurate?
GPTZero was more accurate than ZeroGPT on every sample group in our test. On the same 28 texts, GPTZero was right 28 times, while ZeroGPT was right 26 times by its label and 22 times by its score.
| Result on the same 28 texts | GPTZero (Basic Scan) | ZeroGPT (free checker) |
|---|---|---|
| Plain AI caught | 10 of 10 | 10 by label, 8 by score |
| Disguised AI caught | 6 of 6 | 4 by label, 2 by score |
| Human texts wrongly flagged | 0 of 12 | 0 of 12 |
| Label and score disagree | Never | 6 of 28 texts |
| Free limit | 10,000 words a month | 15,000 characters per check |
ZeroGPT's advantage is access: its checker needs no account, while GPTZero allowed us three anonymous scans before asking for a free account. Our earlier tests of Originality.ai and JustDone used a different sample design, so their numbers are not directly comparable with these.
Is ZeroGPT Accurate Enough to Replace Turnitin?
ZeroGPT is not a safe stand in for Turnitin, based on the only side by side test we found. On 160 samples, DecEptioner measured Turnitin at 82.50% accuracy with a 1.28% false positive rate, against 73.75% and 20.51% for ZeroGPT, while both caught about two thirds of the AI samples.
We did not test Turnitin ourselves, and Turnitin sells mainly to schools and universities, not to individual students. If you want to know how your work might score, ZeroGPT's verdict is likely a weak preview of what Turnitin will say.
ZeroGPT Free Limits and Pricing
ZeroGPT's free checker handles up to 15,000 characters per check without an account, and paid plans raise that limit, according to ZeroGPT's pricing page in October 2026.
| ZeroGPT plan | Billed annually | Billed monthly | Characters per check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 15,000 |
| PRO | $8.99 a month ($107.88 a year) | $14.99 | 100,000 |
| PLUS | $13.99 a month ($167.88 a year) | $21.99 | 100,000 |
| MAX | $19.99 a month ($239.88 a year) | $30.99 | 150,000 |
ZeroGPT also sells an AI Humanizer, and its results page showed a "Make Your Text Human With Undetectable AI" promotion under AI verdicts during our test, so I read its verdicts knowing it also sells a way around them.
FAQ
Is ZeroGPT accurate?
Partly. In our October 2026 test, ZeroGPT's headline verdict was right on 26 of 28 texts, but its own AI percentage was right on only 22 of 28, and it let disguised AI text through. ZeroGPT advertises 98.4% detection accuracy.
Is ZeroGPT or GPTZero more accurate?
GPTZero, in our test. On the same 28 texts GPTZero was right 28 times, while ZeroGPT was right 26 times by its label and 22 times by its score. GPTZero caught all 6 disguised AI texts; ZeroGPT's score caught 2.
Why does ZeroGPT flag my human writing?
ZeroGPT reads smooth, predictable writing as more AI like. It flagged none of our 12 human texts, but its highest human scores, 24.9% and 17%, went to formal academic introductions, and an outside test of 160 samples found it flagged 16 of 78 human texts.
Is ZeroGPT as accurate as Turnitin?
Not in the only side by side test we found. DecEptioner measured 82.50% accuracy and a 1.28% false positive rate for Turnitin against 73.75% and 20.51% for ZeroGPT on 160 samples. We did not test Turnitin ourselves.
Is ZeroGPT free?
Yes for basic checks: ZeroGPT checks up to 15,000 characters at a time with no account. Paid plans start at $8.99 a month billed annually and raise the limit to 100,000 characters per check.
Final Thoughts
Is ZeroGPT accurate? It catches plain, formal AI text well and cleared every human text we gave it, but its score missed 6 of 16 AI texts, it let a sloppy student style essay through as human, and its label and score disagreed on 6 of 28 checks. Use it for a free, quick look, and use GPTZero or a human review when a decision matters.
